Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development of Nigeria have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing the nation’s aviation sector. With Africa poised for significant growth in air traffic—projected to exceed the global average over the next 20 years—this partnership underscores the region’s potential as a key player in the global aviation market.
“We are thrilled to embark on this strategic partnership with Boeing, which will greatly benefit Nigerian airlines and enhance the country’s civil aviation ecosystem,” said Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo. “As Africa’s largest economy and home to its largest population, Nigeria has a pivotal role to play in driving aviation growth across the continent. This collaboration aligns with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s priority to support local operators in achieving sustainable growth. We look forward to working closely with Boeing to bring this vision to life.”
Under the agreement, Boeing will offer a range of support to the Nigerian aviation sector, including planning workshops, training, technical assistance, and operational assessments for airline operators.
“This MoU marks a significant step toward establishing a robust and sustainable aviation ecosystem in Nigeria,” said Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales for Africa. “Nigeria’s potential to drive economic growth, connect communities, and shape the future of aviation in Africa and beyond makes this partnership both meaningful and impactful.”
Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook anticipates that Africa will require 1,170 new airplanes over the next 20 years. With over 75 years of presence in Africa, Boeing continues to be a cornerstone of the continent’s aviation industry, with more than 60 airlines operating approximately 500 Boeing aircraft—accounting for nearly 70% of the market share. This partnership reflects Boeing’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting the development of Nigeria’s aviation sector as a driver of economic and social progress.
